Events

1975

University Correspondence Courses (UCC) were introduced for the first time during 1975-76 Academic Year (AY) at Yangon Arts and Science University.

1976

Radio lessons for Arts and Law students were first broadcast in 1976-77 AY.

1978

UCCs were extended to Mandalay Arts and Science University in 1978-79 AY.

1980

The Ministry of Education took over the administration of UCC on 31 December 1980.

1981

Starting from 1981-82 AY branches of the Department of UCC were established at other Arts and Science Universities and also at Pathein and Mawlamyine Degree Colleges.

1986

From 1985-86 AY separate registration of Correspondence students was permitted at all Universities, Degree Colleges and Colleges.

Events

1992

All UCCs were reorganized and restructured and the University of Distance Education (UDE) was established on 9 July 1992.

The Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee came to UDE on 26-7-92 and 23-8-92.

A study Delegation to STOU in Bangkok, Thailand was led by the Rector of UDE October 1992.

TV lessons for arts and law students were first broadcast in October 1992.

A total of 19 Regional Centres of UDE were established at Universities, degree colleges and colleges.

1993

The UDE paper mill in Hlaing Campus started production of recycled paper.

A new UDE Regional Centre was established at Kalay College.

The Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee came to UDE on 3-1-93 and 27-7-93, inspected distance education activities and gave guidance.

1994

A new three-storey building was completed within the UDE compus. The floor space was mainly alloted to Academic Affairs Department.

GEC (Education) Co-operative Limited of UDE was founded.

A new UDE Regional Centre was established at Dagon University.

The Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee came to UDE on 13-8-94, heard reports on development of distance education and gave guidance.

1995

The Minister for Education, U Pan Aung, came to UDE to inspect the activities of GEC (Education) in January 1995.

The Minister for Education, U Pan Aung, inspected the UDE Paper Mill in April 1995.

A new UDE Regional Centre was established at Loikaw.

The Rector of UDE went to Japan in September 1995 on a study tour of Distance Education activities at some Universities in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Pro Rector U Swon Ti of UDE attended "Regional Workshop on Distance Education as an aspect of HRD" held in Shanghai, in October 1997.

The UDE participated in various activities commemorating the Diamond Jubilee Year of Yangon University in 1995.

The First Convocation of UDE was held in December 1995.

1996

The UDE became a member of International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).

Workshop on TV Production in Distance Education was held at MERB.

To study " Educational Technology for DE" three professors from UDE went on a study tour to Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in India and to Yunan Radio and TV University in the Peoples' Republic of China in February 1996.

A regional workshop on "Innovations in Distance Education" was held in May 1996.

Representatives from India, China, UNESCO-PROAP (Bangkok) and Myanmar participated in the workshop.

The Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee came to UDE on 7th September 1996, inspected distance education activities and gave guidance.

A delegation consisting of ten professors and six senior administrative officers of UDE went on a study-tour to STOU in November 1996.

The second to fifth Convocations of UDE were held in 1996.

1997

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Than Nyunt, came to UDE in August 1997 for inspection and gave guidance.

The Rector of UDE attended Planning Meeting for Formulation of UNESCO UNITWIN Network in Distance Education at Greater Mekong Sub-Region in Kunming in October 1997.

Research officer Daw Aye Aye Mu of UDE attended training programme in "Information Storage & Retrieval Systems" held in October 1997 in Hyderabad, India.

1997 The sixth to tenth Convocations of UDE were held in 1997.

1998

UDE, Mandalay was established on 18 May 1998. UDE, Yangon now takes charge of Regional Centres in Lower Myanmar while UDE, Mandalay is now in charge of Regional Centres in Upper Myanmar.

Deputy Minister Dr. Than Nyunt and DG U Myo Nyunt came to inspect UDE in August, 1998 and gave directives and guidance.

The Rector of UDEY was appointed a Member of Governing Board of SEAMEO Regional Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC)

Completion of L-shape three-storey building in UDEY campus. The building accomodates ten academic departments, materials production dept. and cash dept. among others.

A shrine room for UDEY Buddhist Association was inaugurated.

A Recording Studio at UDEY was established and now all audio recordings are carried out in this Studio.

Head of Division of Materials Producation Dept. Daw Phyu Phyu Khin attended "TV Production and Direction Course" held in KL, Malaysia, in Octobrer 1998.

The eleventh to seventeenth Convocations of UDE were held in 1998.

1999

Under the sponsorship of CHRD, the first English Proficiency Course and Apple Macintosh Computer Training Course were launched in January 1999.

The eighteenth Convocation of UDE was held in January 1999.

DG U Myo Nyunt came to UDEY to give directives and guidance on distance education activities in March 1999.

The Minister for Education U Than Aung came to UDEY on 11th August 1999, heard reports given by the Rector and gave necessary guidance.

The Chairman of Myanmar Education Committe came to UDEY on 21st September 1999, inspected distance education activities and gave guidance.

The Rector of UDEY attended the 2nd Governing Board Meeting of SEAMOLEC held in Yogjakarta, Indonesia, in September 1999.

New UDE Regional Centres were established at Kyainton College, Myeik College and Thanlyin Degree College.

Two new subject specializations : English and Oriental Studies and five Interdisciplinary Subjects : Myanmar Studies, Creative Writing, Home Economics, Public Policy and Business Management are introduced for 1999-2000 AY.

New academic programmes and new delivery and evaluation systems for 1997 matriculates are carried out for 1999-2000 AY.

The nineteenth Convocation of UDE was held in December 1999.

The UDEY participated in "IT and Education in Myanmar 2000" Exhibition held in December 1999.

Pro-Rector Dr. Mya Oo and the Head of Materials Production Department U Win Pe of UDEY attended the Workshop on "Educational Media Human Resource Development in Southeast Asia Countries" held in Thailand in January. Twentieth, twenty-first and twenty-second convocations of UDEY were held.A new studio for audio and video production was completed in March.The Rector and senior staff of UDEY participated in the Seminar on the Special Four Year Plan to upgrade the standard of national education in Myanmar sponsored by MOE in April.Professor of Chemistry Dr. Khin Mar Tun and Professor of Geography Daw May Win Yee attended the "Curriculum Development, Multimedia Production, Organization and Management of Distance Education Training" held in Thailand in May.TV Technician Grade I U Thant Zin Oo of Materials Production Department attended "Video Production Facility Training" held in Thailand in May.

The Pro-Rector Dr. Mya Oo went on a study tour to Indira Gandhi National Open University ( IGNOU ) in India to study the distance education system in November and signed MOU between two universities to open the courses according to distance education system.

TV Technician Grade II Daw Mya Mya Win of Materials Production Department attended "Human Resource Development & Southeast Asia Countries " held in Thailand in November.

The UDEY participated in "School Family Day for the 2000-2001 academic year " exhibition held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in December.

2001

e-Education was launched in the country by using the Satellite Data Broadcasting System in January .

Discussion Session on Open and Distance Education System was held at UDEY with Professor Dr. K. Ayyakkannu, Advisor, Overseas Programmes, Annamalai University, India and Pro-Rector, Professors, Heads of Administrative Departments, Associate Professors of UDEY in February.

Professor U Than Nyunt, Department of Philosophy UDEM, and Associate Professor Daw Thet Htar Win, Department of Psychology, UDEY attended the Regional Training Workshop on Self-Learning Materials Development held in Jakarta, Indonesia in August.

The Rector of UDEY attended the "The Fourth SEAMOLEC Governing Board Meeting" held in Jakarta, Indonesia in October.

Daw Yu Yu Lwin, Assistant Manager (Computer), Department of Research and Development, UDEY, attended training programme in "Network Administration and Management " held in Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore in October.

Professor, Daw Khin Win Kyi, Department of Physics UDEY, attended the "The International 7th Syposium on Open and Distance Learning" held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in November.

2002

The First graduation ceremony for Diploma in Information Technology of the CHRD (YUDE) in collaboration with World Peace IT/KMD was held in July.

A ceremony to honour the 2nd year Business Management Student Ma Khaing Khaing Maw, who won the gold medal for Wushu in the XIV Asian Games was held in October.

The YUDE participated in the ICT exhibition - " Creating Knowledge Through ICT " in the School Family Day Festival for 2000-2001 academic year held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in December.

2003

A new UDE Regional Centre was established at West Yangon University in Jaunary.

A new UDE Regional Centre was established at Maubin University in January.

The Thirtieth to Thirty-fourth convocations of YUDE were held during January , February and March.

The Second graduation ceremony for Diploma in Information Technology of the CHRD (YUDE) in collaboration with World Peace IT/KMD was held in February.

A seminar on " Education Media in Distance Education " presented by Rector Dr. Mya Oo of YUDE was held in March.

A seminar on " Education Technology " presented by Chairman U Myint Han of Myanmar Education Research Bureau was held in April.

A seminar on "Distance Education " presented by Chairman U Than Oo of Myanmar Education Academy of Arts and Science was held in April.

Paper Reading Session commemorating the 11th Anniversary of YUDE was held in July.

A seminar on "Internet" presented by Statistics Associate Professor U Lay Kyi of Yangon Institute of Economics, was held in August.

For the development of distance learning and e-Campus in Asia, Rector of YUDE and director of UNESCO signed an Activity- Financing Contract in August at the Diamond Jubilee Hall.

A seminar on "Open Source Distance Learning" presented by Executive Director Daw Ohnmar Tun Pe of Myanmar Compu Mart, was held in September.

The Thirty-Fifth to Thirty-Ninth convocations of YUDE were held during September, October, November and December.

Head of Research and Development Department U Ngwe Soe and Professor of Chemistry Dr. Khin Mar Tun attended the "Workshop for the Establishment of the Greater Mekong Sub-regional Virtual University, 9-10 October, and a Training course in VClass from 13-17 October 2003, at AIT" in Thailand.

A seminar on "Use of ICT in Distance Education" presented by Director General U Tin Nyo of Basic Education Department No.1 was held in October.

A seminar on "On e-Education in Myanmar" presented by Deputy Director General U Sein Win of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) was held in October.

A seminar on "On what a Teacher is" presented by Professor of Botany Daw Tin Tin Thaung YUDE was held in October.

A seminar on "Warso would gradually move to Pyatho" presented by Professor / Head of Department of Mathematics U Maung Maung YUDE was held in November.

A seminar on "The Foundation of Yangon University of Distance Education" presented by Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, Dr. Khin Maung Win of Yangon University was held in November.
