Introduction

               The subject, Oriental Studies was introduced into the University Correspondence courses for the first time during 1975-76 Academic year at Yangon Arts and Science University. As a minor subject, specialization for Myanmar, History and Philosophy, the Courses were given. As a major subject, the courses were given from the outset of 1999-2000 Academic year at Yangon University of Distance Education.
               The Oriental Studies is based on the Buddhist Studies. Basically it is to study Pāli language and literature. Pāli is the Language used as the only media in the study of Theravāda Buddhist Texts and commentaries etc. In addition, Sanskrit, Prakrit, the history of Buddhism for Theravāda and Mahāyāna, the Pāli Inscriptions, the Buddhist Philosophy, Ethics and Psychology (Abhidhamma), the Buddhist Art and Architecture, the Buddhist Culture, traditions, Customs and Linguistics are to the studied.
               The Pāli language and literature that based on the Buddhist Culture Contribute to Myanmar in the development of Myanmar language, literature, culture, customs, traditions and social dealings. So the Oriental Studies subject is very essential at the national level. Also it is a subject valuable at the international level. In the international relations, Pāli language is very useful because it is a dialect belongs to the Indo-European Language family. It is an inflectional language like the languages: English, German, Russian, Latin and Greek so on. They have similarities in the word formation. Pāli can be used by transliteration in one’s own local script. Roman script is mostly used worldwide. This subject can make culture exchange within other countries.

              The Department of Oriental Studies works with the most important subjects for teaching and learning.
